3D Secure

Use 3D Secure to add an authentication step to supported card payments. It helps verify that the customer is the legitimate cardholder before the payment is completed.

3D Secure can reduce fraud risk and may be required for certain online card payments, depending on region, payment method, provider, and regulatory requirements.

How 3D Secure works

3D Secure adds an authentication step during the payment flow.

A typical 3D Secure flow includes these steps:

  1. The customer starts a card payment.
  2. Dinape sends the payment request through the configured channel and provider.
  3. The payment is checked to determine whether 3D Secure authentication is required.
  4. If authentication is required, the customer completes the verification step.
  5. The provider returns the authentication result.
  6. The transaction status is updated in Dinape.

The exact flow depends on the payment method, provider, and channel configuration.

Authentication flows

3D Secure authentication can happen in different ways.

In a frictionless flow, the payment can be authenticated without asking the customer for additional input.

In a challenge flow, the customer must complete an additional verification step, such as confirming the payment with their bank.

When to use 3D Secure

Use 3D Secure when you want to add cardholder authentication to supported card payments.

3D Secure can be used to:

  • reduce fraud risk for online card payments
  • support Strong Customer Authentication requirements where applicable
  • increase trust in the checkout flow
  • provide additional authentication data for payment processing

info 3D Secure availability depends on the payment method, provider, and channel configuration.

Before you start

Before using 3D Secure, make sure that:

  • the channel is configured
  • the payment provider is connected to the channel
  • the payment method supports 3D Secure
  • the checkout or payment flow can handle authentication steps
  • payment result handling is configured where required

For provider setup, see Integrations Overview.
